Citizen Journalism
Global Voices Article
What it is:
Global Voices is a website that has been created to allow
people to write their own journalism pieces if they think it is needed or they
want to make them. In the about us page they say they are “a border-less,
largely volunteer community of more than 1400 writers, analysts, online media
experts, and translators” their trusted
team of editors which are in over 167 different countries report on news that
they think is relevant in their country/continent.
Some advantages to Citizen Journalism sites is that you can
get a largely unbiased website as you can have people from all over the world,
who may or may not have a political opinion.
Another advantage is that you can create a large non-profit
company as the people working and creating articles are not necessarily being
paid to create the journalistic articles
Whilst some people say these Citizen Journalism Websites are
unbiased other think otherwise and say that the person who writes the article
has some bias towards how they convey the article. This can be similar to some
larger regular news companies who can have a political opinion
For example, in the article on the Global Voices website
‘Crimes of Solidarity Once again lead to Outcry in France’ this article is
talking about how migrants have to cross over the Alps from Italy into France
and how the public is outraged about the conditions that they are in, tweeting
about Emmanuel Macron and his choices, plus the new policies he has set.
‘Crimes of Solidarity’ Once again lead to Outcry in France - Global Voices Article
The page details some of the problems in France as well as
some of the publics opinions for example some people tweeted:
“In @EmmanuelMacron‘s world, it seems that:minors are abandoned in the mountains at the Col de l'Échelle
minors are locked up in detention centers
migrants are tear gassed and deprived of water
tents are slashed
volunteers are taken to court for crimes of solidarity Link: pic.twitter.com/THlUZ68v2G”
This article
seems quite left leaning due to the fact they mainly include statistics about
the problems when the migrants are coming into France, and what can happen to
them, where as an unbiased article would state the positives of the migrant’s
information and it would also include some problems with the immigration.
Similarly, in
papers like the Guardian, which is considered a very Liberal left leaning
newspaper also has the same approach to documenting the travels and experiences
of the migrants and how many problems they face. As the Guardian is not
Conservative at all they also have the same approach as the article above.
Another thing
about the article is that it has many Tweets and other opinions about the
subject, I believe this is to make it so that there are many other opinions
available so that people
On Paris’ Icy
Streets, Migrants Wait for Word on Refuge – The Guardian
This article seems to villainize the French Government a lot
more than the Global Voices one. Often saying things like
“I respect France, but France does not respect me,” he said.
The Title uses the adjective “Icy” to create more drama and
make the user feel bad and sorry for all that Migrants that enter the country illegally.
This is to try and guilt the French people into feeling
sorry for the Refugees who are coming into the EU and France. This Pathos plays
on the hearts of the French people as they will believe that they need to do
more for the migrants entering the country.
The Article has many 1st person accounts from
different people coming into the country as Refugees, people from all over the
world such as Sudan, Kenya, Syria and Iraq. They document their stories trying
to get to France and then talk about their conditions back home. Which is
another way to make the French people feel guilty.
This Article is written by a Liberal person who believes
that all people dissevered the same equal opportunities. As a more Conservative
article could possibly talk about some of the problems with Mass immigration with
no Integration, for examples Cities in places like Sweden or Germany which have
a larger Foreign population that actual Germans.
Comparison
Some interesting
things between both of the articles are that even though the Global Voices article
is supposed to be an article without bias, due to being citizen journalism, it
seems to me that anyone who writes the article will have a bias regardless of
their choices when writing, as the subject they write about will automatically
have bias, for example in the article that I have chosen to analyse it is about
the “Crimes of Solidarity” even the title has bias in it as the injustice
delivered to the migrants in Paris are “Crimes” some people would view this as
left leaning, when citizen journalism is supposed to be unbiased.
Most news articles are usually written in a regular format, instead of as a Global Voices article are written by citizen journalism. I believe this is because people will find the information that they want to find. This is referred to as a bubble. People who agree with one type of paper will place themselves inside a bubble with views similar to that of themselves, where as to correctly tell both sides of the story you have to weigh up both sides. Bias occurs when the journalist writing the article does not consider the other sides views or disagrees with their opinions. This is apparent in papers such as the Guardian or the Daily Mail, who both have different political / moral ideas.

Similarly, the Guardian is the most left leaning newspaper that
is available in the UK with some people even referring to people who read it as
“Guardianistas” it is apparent that the article that they have written is a
left leaning article as the language used is very emotive which could be seen
as a way to pander to the migrants and those that agree with their entry into
the country.
In comparison both articles are similar on topic however the
Guardian article tries way harder to show how hard done to the migrants are, whereas
the Global Voices article does not pander as much to the left, and involves more
facts and statistics.
