News Values

J. Galtung and M. Ruge said that there are 12 Factors that influence the news, these are known as News Values

The Twelve Values are:

1. Frequency – Long term event reported on regularly – Brexit in which the UK plans on leaving the European Union, as the UK believes that it would be better off outside the EU

2. Size and Scale – The bigger the event the more likely it is to be reported on – Trump and Kim Jong-Un.

3. Predictability – Is it an event that was expected to happen or anticipated – A far right demonstration and the ensuing riots that often come with them from groups like Antifa.

4. Closeness to home / Proximity – If it has relevance to Britain, local to the UK – UK terrorist attack on London Bridge vs a Mudslide in India

5. Demand – It is an event that we want to happen – The Royal Wedding which is a national event that people want to know about.

6. Unexpectedness – events that happen without warning. – Pet Detectives to use Drones to track down lost dogs.

7. Rarity – Something not predicted – The Japanese Tsunami on the 11th March 2011

8. Continuity – an ongoing story that has high news value – The Murder/Kidnapping/ Mystery of Maddie McCann who went missing in Portugal, Princess Dianna Death and the circumstance around it, Transfer Saga when football is on and a play might be transferred.

9. Elite Nations – Stories that involve powerful nations (political or financial)  Trump and his planned Mexico Border Wall

10. Elite People – People in the Public Eye – Celebrity News – Celebrities going shopping e.c.t.

11. Ordinary people, Human interest story – Story about an ordinary person that might represent an issue or someone that provokes sympathy/approval/disapproval – Homeless man helps Manchester Bombing Victims (Actually robbing them)

12. Negativity – Bad News Sells – Murder of Rhys Jones, Acid Attacks on the rise in London, Car Crash Statistics.

News Values in news articles

Frequency – Elon musk and his company SpaceX are quite
often wrote about in the news as people are interested and
intrigued by the activities within the SpaceX company. Many
news sources love to talk about the latest coming from within.

Size and Scale – SpaceX is quite a large company within the US
that is at the forefront of technology, recently launching a
rocket into space and making it land again. Talking about how
both companies Tesla and SpaceX are only around by “the
skin of their teeth” is quite amazing.

Predictability – I believe this article was unexpected as many
people believe that Elon Musk's companies are incredible money
makers, Tesla is seen as one of the most innovation
companies in the US so jot many people would know this
would happen.

Proximity – This story is in the US although most large stories
in the US also make news in the UK due to the western nature
of the article.

Demand – This article is not something that anyone wanted, but sometimes some articles need to be reported on.

Unexpectedness – I believe the article from Elon was unexpected although the interview was
organised the speech within is not other than the questions that would of been determined before
the interview.

Rarity – I do not think this article is rare as it is something that could of easily happened to any company even large ones for example Blockbuster and Toys ‘r Us.

Continuity – This article does not continue on from any other major stories related to the SpaceX or Tesla companies it is the start of a new timeline.

Elite Nations – This article is about a large company in the US that is quite important in the US as it is quite a large and advanced company inside the US

Elite People – This article is definitely about an elite person. Elon Musk is quite an influential figure
who is trying to help advance society by creating trips to Mars and providing eco-friendly cars that run on electricity. He also has a huge Twitter following as he often replies to most questions.

Ordinary People – Elon Musk is definitely not an ordinary person as he is constantly in the piblic eye. As well as he is extremely intelligent and famous.

Negativity – I wouldn’t say this is a negative article ... I would however say that it is unfortunate as he has done os much for technology and to learn that his companies aren’t doing well is quite
unfortunate to hear.
