Trends

Some trends involving how news is consumed are
1.       The gap between television and online news consumption is narrowing – This suggests that 50% of the population gets their news from the television, and rising is 43% of people who have got their news off an online news source. This increase is readership via the online digital format shows that more and more people are moving onto the internet as a way to seek out information, instead of relying on the television is slowly becoming less used, as people become busier and impatient.

2.       Another interesting trend in information is that news that is posted on social media only 5% of the population actually trust the news that they read on social media. This is a low number suggesting that there is a large distrust between social media, sharing and receiving news on this type of platform. This is probably as a result of all the fake news that people keep suggesting is being created, as well as Russian Bots that create fake news stories. Overall most people distrust news that is provided on social media.

3.       A trend that is very apparent is the amount of older people who have started to use social media and obtain information online. 85% of all older people who have access to the internet receive some sort of news from the internet. This shows that more and more old people are likely to visit news sites online.

Online

Most newspapers have started to move online as a result in the drop off in people purchasing newspapers.
Some Companies that fully operate online and thrive there instead of choosing to print papers are:

Independent

The Independent newspaper have fully moved to a digital format, as they believed it would be a better business decision than to continue to print papers that do not sell as well. Instead making money off advertising on the site and app. “Its monthly audience has grown 33.3% in the last 12 months to nearly 70 million global unique users. The site is profitable and is expected to see revenue growth of 50% this year”.

Buzzfeed

Buzzfeed are a social media company operating out of California who create online news on social media. Business insider explains that Buzzfeed works by having an algorithm that monitors other websites that have news articles, videos and images. The algorithm then decides how much traction that each source is getting, adding it to a list of articles that might want to be created based off of the traction of other news sites. Then a writer at Buzzfeed investigates the source and then if they believe that the article will bring in large amounts of traffic, they will write an article that will feature on the Buzzfeed website, or their other forms of social media, such as Snapchat where they are regularly allowed to have articles on the Discover tab.
Overall Buzzfeed gets its money off of things going viral; and then diverting the traffic to their website and making the money off of advertising and CPM.
